Fire Dogs

At one time, china dogs like these would have had pride of place on the fireplace
of most Irish homes. Somehow we never seemed to have amassed a pair although
my family have lived in this house for generations. I don't recall my mother
ever saying that we had a set, perhaps because we have a china elephant instead.
This collection was on display at the Flower Market where I had lunch today.

Very interesting and many stories here. They look like they've been around. Looks like we're mismatched here, we have donkey and a dog on the fireplace mantle. (Photo to follow)

it looks as if these chipped and charred pups have warmed themselves by many a fire...the guardian hens look great too..

Interesting. We have a cricket on our hearth for good luck. Nice shot.

What is the symbolism behind having a pair of china dogs?
These do look well loved and worn, but make a great image Mairead! :)

Aww... this pair must have seen better days. Many a story behind their finally being on display here.
