New book case

The evening sunlight shines in on our new bookcase. For the first time ever, we've got more shelves than books. We've tidied our other book cases, gathered up piles of books from various rooms, and there's still room for more. It's also bringing out the hidden librarian in me (that was my second or third career choice when I was at school) so I am having fun sorting the books, putting the classic Penguins in order, deciding where to put the non-fiction and poetry sections, wondering what to do if we've got books by the same author in different imprints or worse still, in hardback and paperbacks.
Funny to think that all these books would fit on a Kindle. But there wouldn't be the same temptation to pick up a book, sit in the armchair, and browse through it. I know I'm going to dip into some books which I haven't looked at in years, will read the odd poem or two, and seek out photography tips.

That probably won't last long; my shelves and books are waging a constant battle for supremacy. I looked at Kindle to solve just that problem (replacing (non-art/photography) books that I may never read again but want to keep just in case I do; not to mention the decay of some pages) but didn't like the proprietary format. However it's academic as restrictive trade practices mean that Australia gets screwed over in both range and price. I think you could get away with a similar shot of a Kindle; after all, a reading mood is a reading mood...

P.S. Do they turn around to reveal a secret network of caves :-)

I can see why you chose the time of day you did to photograph your handy work. Grand light

I just had such a conversation at work tonight about the 'Kindle', just not the same. How can you replicate that feel of a book especially an old one that has been read many times by different people, or even a new crisp one with that excitement of opening the cover. The wife is convinced the Kindle is the work of the devil! Love the light breaking across the shelves.

All these books might fit on a Kindle, like you said, but then you wouldn't have had the opportunity for this pretty photo. Books shelves are so special because even just looking at them with their different colored jackets brings up memories of a good read. V

You will have everyone rushing down to Ikea, those bookcases look really good. Hope you have many happy hours of reading over the winter. v.

I like the graphics and light and shadow. I wonder if I put my Kindle in sunlight if I could match this. :) V

Wonderful lighting and subject matter, and as a bibliophile I totally agree with you. There's nothing like rereading and rediscovering and old book and the memories of reading it before and making new discoveries in it. "V"

a varied and extensive library is such a treasure...setting it up on new shelves does offer a great opportunity to revisit a few special volumes, some well worth a re-read, some re- discovered as yet unread, some valued simply for their inherent associations...this still looks freshly assembled too...over time other personal artifacts will begin to claim a spot...then it will take on a really personal character

As long as you don't create a card catalogue, you'll be okay. I just love the sunlight on the bookcase, which turned out great too.
