The secret life of handbags

A French sociologist (who else?) had just written a book about women and their handbags.
Apparently he concludes that handbags aren't just frivolous fashion statements but a sign
of female emancipation and the bigger the bag we carry, the more emancipated we are
(presumably that's so long as it's not a changing bag!).
So what does my bag say about me? Don't be deceived by the designer logo - this was
a TK Maxx purchase - and the bag ticked all the boxes as it was stylish and big enough
to hold all the stuff I carry around on a daily basis. There's room for my camera, purse,
make-up bag, iPhone, sunglasses, pens, and an apple. Dig deeper and you would also
find more pens, loose change, my gym card and driver's licence, an orange, loads of
old receipts, and unsent Christmas cards (yes, really). There's plenty of space for a shorthand
notebook for when I'm working, gloves for when it's cold and sometimes it even contains
dog treats.

Sounds just about right to me. I dare not go there though I will confess to once carrying 5 different lipsticks....

Sitting here, 6.30 am laughing and reading out loud your comment to my brother -in- law...he questioned the dog treats and I explained :))
Love the story and shot

Lovely image Mairead and insight to the contents of your handbag....I go for bags big enough to hold my camera plus all the other things I must have...BV

Nice B&W image Mairead, and I like your thoughts on the perfect handbag. I guess I gave up years ago on that! V

I wish men used those. We have to stuff everything in our pockets!

delicious, and so revealing...I too have a shoulder bag primed with numerous artifacts, and of course a camera in there too... a few portable treasures can support the life we work for...and strive to maintain...is that the apple peaking out?....V

Very interesting story and terrific, detailed shot! Reminds me of Hermione's bag with the undetectable bottomless charm in the last HP movie! :-) V

I've downsized and upsized so many times over the years. Mostly, I carry a camera bag with pockets for my phone, wallet and some antibacterial handwipes. When I do carry a handbag, lately I am using a rather large bag so I can carry my camera along too... hmmm, Looks like I need emancipated from my camera. This is a great photo, Mairead. Excellent, really. V

I read about that study too! Had to laugh. He didn't say anything about women who have just about given up on handbags! I now use a backpack instead so that I can haul my camera, small tripod, extra batteries...
Lovely B&W image! V

Certain levels of emancipation last only until the appointment with the chiropractor. Useful range of tones here; it keeps the amount of detail that's needed, and no more.

My life up to a few years ago was a quest for the perfect handbag. Now that has been superseded by a quest for the perfect camera bag. A lot of effort, mixed results!

Ahhh, the internal workings of a lady's handbag...a mystery to all men, it's like a TARDIS in there...
