Before the Quake

It was serendipity, nothing more, nothing less, which led
my husband to buy these novels by Japanese writer
Haruki Murakami last night.
Less than twelve hours later Japan was rocked by a massive earthquake
and devastating tsunami. Television footage looks like something
from a disaster movie, reminding us of the forces of nature and
the frailty of human life.
I am never going to complain about the Irish weather again - it might
be miserable a lot of the time, but it's rarely life-threatening.

Having experienced earthquakes in Indonesia and here in California, I can say that they are terrifying because of the utter feeling of helplessness one has during the tremors. Hopefully the seismic activity in Japan will lessen for a while now that the faults have shifted.

Serendipity for sure! Let us all hope that the loss of human life is not as devastating as the videos have looked. I like the titles of these two books. Hope they are a good read.

And that's why I don't mind the snow - you can always stay indoors no matter long it lasts. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes are so much more devastating than a snow storm. It's going to be terrible there in Japan for so long.

Yes, I saw that this morning. The earth seems unusually restless at the moment after taking out a chunk of Christchurch in New Zealand only a few weeks ago. You've got some good lighting on this; enough to keep the spines bright and sharp but with no sharply defined shadow behind, which could have been distracting.
