20-DEC-2010

The cold spell is showing no signs of releasing its grip on Ireland with the
lowest ever temperature of minus 19c recorded in Co Tyrone last night.
It was minus 6 when I set off this morning for a scary journey to work
on slippery roads. The National Roads Authority is running out of salt
and has instructed local councils to only salt the country's national
primary routes leaving thousands of miles of minor country roads
and streets untreated. A woman and her 9 year old son were killed on
Saturday when the car driven by her husband went out of control and
hit a wall. The council admitted that the road was untreated following
an announcement the previous day that salt supplies are to rationed and
priority given to national routes.
This crisis was one of the main issues discussed at this morning's
County Council meeting which I covered. These shining steel cubes,
engraved with the names of ships which sailed into Dundalk port,
stand outside the council offices.
I could have sworn I'd charged the battery for my D90 last night but
when I took the camera out to take this shot, the battery was dead.
So it was the iPhone to the rescue.

Nice work with the Iphone! Shame about the roads and cold weather.

love the vignetting in this absorbing view...the warm light belies the treacherous conditions on your roads...hope for no more tragedies, particularly at this time of year..

Great glow of reflected light from the cubes...such a contrast with the traditional buildings in the background.
Drive safely! V

Batteries are almost as unreliable as I am at those temperatures ;o) Keep warm -- it ends, eventually!

Captured the moment of light beautifully - I get a lot of stick for using my iPhone, but needs must. By the sound of it I expect the cold got to your battery.

Wonderful image with your iPhone Mairead!
I hope that Ireland is able to acquire more salt from somewhere.

Nice composition.

Very nice shot. Perhaps shutting down the town is in order and then you'll have lots of time for family and photos. Thanks for reminding me to put my batteries on charge just in case the skies clear up tonight for the eclipse :-)
Carl Carbone20-Dec-2010 21:12
Nice light too. Hope it warms up for you!

Not a bad effort for an iPhone. Certainly captures the "chilliness" of the atmosphere.
Kevin Chester20-Dec-2010 20:54
Such a shame your SLR was flat because this is a good composition.
