The Hunt

I had just come back from taking Fudge for a walk and was playing
with him in the garden, when I heard the distinctive clip clap of hooves
on the road. I went to the gate, expecting to see maybe half a dozen ponies
from the local riding school. Instead, the hunt went past, with a full pack of
hounds. Fudge was a bit intimidated by the horses and dogs passing by
so close and I was glad that we were safely inside the gate.
Fox hunting is, of course, a controversial topic. I don't support any bloodsports,
so although fox hunting is a colourful spectacle, I would be in favour a ban. Likewise
I would never go to see bull-fighting on holidays in Spain, even if it part
of that country's 'culture'.

While I like this shot, I really dislike what it is about. I loathe fox-hunting with a passion! It is a truly cruel "sport" and it boggles my mind that "civilized" people can take part in it. What did Oscar Wilde say about fox hunting? Something about The unspeakable in pursuit of the inedible (or uneatable).

Beautiful image Mairead...Totally agree with you...my blood runs cold at the thought of such cruelty...BV

I love the movement in this photo. I can feel the power of the horses and the excitement of the dogs!

I'm in the same camp, its banned in England. Keep an eye out for Fudge, they have a real pack instinct those hounds, I had a close shave with my do a few years ago

A very impressive spectacle. Nicely captured. And I certainly agree with your judgment. I find no joy in tormenting and killing things.

Nice shot; a hint of mist for atmosphere, and the capture of a snippet of conversation between the two riders plus the horses' hooves suspended in the air and the flapping of the dogs' ears imparts a sense of frozen movement.

Wonderful scene...perfectly caught. ~V~

The fancy dress is nice, but how can such cruelty masquerade as a sport. Nonetheless an exceptional capture. V

I can't put into words what the sight of a hunt makes me feel...suffice to say that I whole-heartedly agree with you Mairead. Despite that, they are very photogenic...

Wonderful image Mairead!!!! BV
Fox hunting is very popular where I live too; however, the fox is not killed here. It is just chased.

We would be happy to give the foxes back that were brought here....

Super image - the feeling of motion and power of the horses

Very nice capture. I'm with you. This is a silly and unnecessary "sport". V

I agree with you wholeheartedly, Mairead. Having said that this is a superb image of a classic scene. Well done! ~V~

Well taken image, and well-worded thoughts.

To see this go by must be quite a site...we would never see this by our house in Canada.
A handsome group well shot, kudos to you for having your Oly at the ready. V

Lovely shot of this ancient tradition. And as John says.. luckily, they don't often catch anything. V

The hunt always looks impressive as it trashes through the countryside leaving mayhem in it's wake ;-)
Luckily they rarely catch anything.
Keith O'Brien21-Nov-2010 17:54
Yep, best to keep Fudge away from those hounds! Smart horses btw.

very beautiful ! v
globalgadabout21-Nov-2010 17:38
sharp shooting to catch this moment on the fly...hunting foxes with packs of hounds does seem unfair and cruel...perhaps we are not as civilized as we think...V
