Let Them Eat Cake

My son mightn't be able to boil an egg when he goes to college
but at least he'll be able to make a Christmas cake! As part of
his Home Economics course, he made a Christmas cake at
school today and took it home to have it baked. All evening
there was the most delicious aroma coming from the kitchen.
After it's been 'fed' with sherry for a few weeks, it will be taken
back into school to be iced.
And no, I'm not considering taking up food photography as this
is probably one of the worst shots I've posted on Pbase.

Mairead ~ I just wanted you to know that this photo inspired me to make my first Christmas Cake yesterday!!! It is now wrapped in parchment and foil and will be "fed" once a week! :)

Looks delicious, congratulations to your son. I think it is a very good image.
By the way, if there's an extra cake, let me know. :)

I'm not even sure we still have Home Economics classes in our schools here so my hat's off to your son! When is a camera manufacturer coming out with "smell processing" because I'm betting this has a pretty good aroma :-)

If it tastes as good as it looks, he has created a winner!

So that's what a Christmas cake looks like. Well, I bought the ingredients the other day and plan to give it a go myself (for the first time).
This is a gorgeous image Mairead! BV

A wonderful effort...I have learned that whatever my children make in the kitchen...it always tastes SPECIAL. V

Looks pretty good to me, both photo and cake! In fact, the cake looks mouth-wateringly fine!

I don't think that's true at all; the lighting's at a good angle to bring out the texture and colour of the cake and the surrounding paper and gives it a cheery feel; having the scale and the ingredients in the background add some context but the shallow DOF stops them from stealing the subject's thunder; all in all a mouth-watering composition. (Uh-oh, now that I think of it, where IS Fudge?)
I'm not entirely sure about the Home Ec course not teaching, shall we say, somewhat more nutritionally balanced dishes like beef and vegetable stir fry (mmmm, beeef and vegetable stirrr fryyyy...), but there's no beating the smell of fresh baking. A shot like this is the next best thing.

it's not too bad after all... and it's such a nice story... I can smell it too... and please promis, make another shot when the icing is on...
congrats to your son!!

cheers
