Mid-term Break

Mid-term Break

I sat all morning in the college sick bay
Counting bells knelling classes to a close,
At two o'clock our neighbors drove me home.

In the porch I met my father crying--
He had always taken funerals in his stride--
And Big Jim Evans saying it was a hard blow.

The baby cooed and laughed and rocked the pram
When I came in, and I was embarrassed
By old men standing up to shake my hand

And tell me they were "sorry for my trouble,"
Whispers informed strangers I was the eldest,
Away at school, as my mother held my hand

In hers and coughed out angry tearless sighs.
At ten o'clock the ambulance arrived
With the corpse, stanched and bandaged by the nurses.

Next morning I went up into the room. Snowdrops
And candles soothed the bedside; I saw him
For the first time in six weeks. Paler now,

Wearing a poppy bruise on the left temple,
He lay in the four foot box as in a cot.
No gaudy scars, the bumper knocked him clear.

A four foot box, a foot for every year.

Seamus Heaney

I learned this poem at primary school, it was my introduction
to the power of poetry to evoke emotions and to the work of
Seamus Heaney.
Sadly roadside shrines like this are common in Ireland as we
have one of the highest rates of road fatalities in Europe.

This is very thought provoking and carries much emotion particularly when paired with the poetry. In our country too we have shrines along the roadsides. So many lives lost in an instant.

Very powerful....something we see here too, sadly.

Roadside shrines are often discussed on the news here. It seems that some law-makers feel that they are the cause of accidents and want them removed. I'm not sure what's right...no doubt if it was my loved one, I'd want it to say put.

I can imagine, one thing I decided was, never to ride on bicycle in Ireland, when I was there.

Another sad image. We have many here too.

Very poignant, a sad testament to the fast lane world we live in.

Wonderful poem. Seamus Heany is one of my favourites. Very good image also! V

Love this one - nearly used it myself.
We study his poetry in English. Doing it with a Yr 10 class at the moment.
Really enjoy Seamus Heaney.

I am a lover of poetry but have never read this before - it is very moving. The roadside shrine is a testament to the disregard some have for human life and the heartache left behind.
