This image reminded me of a great Irish love story. You must read the last line to find out why...
Deirdre of the Sorrows
Deirdre, was a very beautiful young woman who was placed in great danger by a prophecy at her birth that many men would die because of her.
As a result her parents gave her in fosterage to the king,Conchubhar Mac Neasa, who agreed to protect her.
One day she saw the young hero Naoise and was instantly smitten with him because he had “hair as dark as a raven's wing, cheeks red as blood and a body as white as snow."
They had to escape to Scotland with Naoise’s brothers -Ainle and Ardan – to avoid the displeasure
of the king who had his eye on her to be a future wife for himself.
When the brothers were lured back to Ireland they were killed treacherously by allies of the king.
Deirdre then had to endure the possible future fate that lay in store for her as a most unwilling consort for a man she hated.
The king and Naoise’s killer mocked Deirdre most cruelly one day while she was in their chariot.
She flung herself out of the chariot, hit her head on rocks and died.
She was buried beside Naoise and the bushes on their graves grew
so that their branches entwined with each other, allowing them to be united in death.
