Thanks for your message. First, you need two things: access to the birds, and second, observation and knowledge of their habits.
Then, taking the position of the sun into consideration (and/or flash), placing myself parallel to the side of the nesting box, and making sure my shutter speed is high enough and depth of field deep enough, I focus on the hole and move my lens off the box in front of the hole. I then take my eye off the eyepiece and wait for the bird. As it passes my lens, I take a burst shot of 2-4 pics.
With a bit of practice, I eventually get what I need, zooming in and out as required. Trust me, I have lots of pics of just heads or tails.
I use a monopod because of the flexibility it gives me in case the bird lands on the box, but a tripod is less tiring.
