I am viewing from New Brunswick, Canada - next to your Maine. On the St John River system, we have 9 cable ferries and 1 self-propelled ferry(my job); on 8 different crossings. All are free and operated by the Provincial Government. There is debate at the Gondola Point crossing, to have the 2 cable ferries replaced by a bridge - it sees heavy rush-hour traffic. However, the gov't has elected to put a new 24-car ferry on the run, followed by a sister ship this Fall.
I have been researching other ferry operations - your pictures are both good for technical detail, and as a picturesque crossing.

Yep it's free, but I think more because it costs less to run, than building a bridge. Quite a few people work on one side or the other, but it's not heavily traveled except for tourists at mid-day. Some people wanted a bridge when the old ferry got too old, it would certainly have changed the character of this area, if they'd have done that. I've been going across here on occasion, for as long as I remember. This was a hard shot, way too contrasty and uncontrasty (I don't think there's a word like that hahaa) in the wrong places, so I took the best one of several and did the best I could in photoshop.
