Railroad Things, Now and Then

I have worked for BNSF for the last 32 years ( Last 28 years as an Engineer) My Dad worked for NP for 43 and little brother for the last 16. Dad saw many changes on the track department over his years as have I. Everyone asks why I don't takes more photos of trains and I say , " Well , it's too much like being at work". I do now wish I would have taken a few more shots at some of the things we no longer have or use. ( Order Boards, Cabooses, F Units, Foot Boards, Nothing like grabbing Train Orders in a Hoop in a Snow Storm!!) Here are a few shots, Enjoy!!

Monte, I just came across 2 of the hand powered rail drills you have pictured. Any idea of their value, and are there alot of them around? The only markings I could find on them were P 3. The guy that has them says they are possibly from the late 1700's?? Can you help me out?

My 18 year old son will be happy you think the 1600 H.P. ALCO's from 1951 were the best. Great gallery!

My dad was a fan all his life, a school friend of his worked during the war years for the Santa Fe in Los Angeles then went on to his family business but the two never lost the bug. Caught me too. Things are different down here around L.A. but loved the gallery!

Thanks for the inside look into a world most of us can only wonder about. I'll feel differently next time I wave at the engineer hauling freight up the Deschutes canyon....

Hi Monte,
I enjoyed your site very much. I'm a hogger on UP (former SP), 30 years with the railroad, last 27 in the seat. My wife and I love Wenatchee and have vacationed there the past 2 summers. I'm a serious H-O scale modeler of BN in the Pacific Northwest circa 1976. Do you have any early BN, CB&Q, NP, GN, SP&S freight car photos? Thanks for the great views, old and new.

Hi Monte,

Just got to see all of your pictures from Wenatchee on my computer. But no picture of your engineer instructor from Centralia, evidently he wasn't good looking enough to have his picture taken! But when you get back to Centralia, you can get me a couple more buckets of honey. Aaron Schwarz is helping me with my new computer, and you can send me some more dope when you can. We now have utility men in Centralia yard. Steve and Rick. Thats all, glad you're getting along ok over there. Right me a note sometime.

But this gallery is really fascinating! Maybe it's because I adore trains and railway stations, but I find it so lively, original and full of impressions!
