Chief Joseph ( Nov. 1877)

Cashmere Washington

Chief Joseph and his tribe of native Americans almost made it to " Freedom" in Canada. Native Americans were treated poorly which is an understatement to say the least. ( Photo was taken of a photo at Cashmere Museum.) The Nez Perce never attacked whites in the plains wars and resqued Lewis and Clark in the Rocky Mountains. The Chief Joseph took over as Chief in 1871 and his trible was given control over the Wallowa Valley , but in 1875 the US governments changed their mind as white settlers poured in to their valley. ( Treaty Breaking was the governments strong suit you might say!!!) Joseph tried to lead his people to Canada in 1976. Sad day for the Nez Perce who were always helpful and friendly and our own Government for treating a friendly tribe so poorly.
