Church Group Dries Out AT James Creek Shelter Near 3 Sisters

James Creek, Oregon

Most the shelters were built by the Civilian Convervation Corps. in the 1930's. By late 70's , these shelters were needing a little repair. ( Forest Service and Park Service chose to burn ,most them down rather than repair these Awesome Icons of our Public Lands) They were a piece of our history that was a shame to lose....... The PCT had several nice ones and should have maintained them as the do along the AT.

This shelter was a life saver for me when I discovered it by accident while cross-country backpacking the Pacific Crest Trail in the snow in 1974. It gave me a dry place to sleep, on the picinic table as the floor was covered in snow, and room to hang out my tent and bag to dry. These structures are, indeed, a harbinger of the past and a most welcome and happy sight. Wish there were more!
