Wooden Ice Axes

Last wooden Ice Axe was sold by REI in 1980. Third one from left was found with a dead climber who had been missing for several years. ( They found the Axes , then 2 weeks later , the guy melted out... First one on left is signed by Jim Whitaker and Tom Horbein who were on 1963 Everest team

I have just received an REI ice axe (that I never new existed) for what had to have been the 60's when he did a lot of backpacking. It is a great item to have. Funny that it came with an old rei coop of seattle day pack.

I still have my Chouinard Frost, with the bamboo handle,
bought at the Kelty Store, Glendale,CA. in 1973.
I do treasure it!

Those are treasures! I remember when the REI catalog had a two-page spread of ice axes---and all were wood (one was of laminated bamboo). That must have been mid- or late-1960s. I have owned only one axe---a metal one I bought in 1983. It was blue when purchased but morphed into bright yellow a few years later.
