No, this is not a veiled sexist comment. In the early days of Canadian
prairie settlement it was not unheard of for newly-settled families
which had not yet either the time or the money to afford buying
livestock it was sometimes the wife who was conscripted to pull the plow or
cultivator. Only the husband was "knowledgable enough" to guide it properly.
