Climbing017

Varadero, Cuba

Best viewed at original size.

Just after the close call I had with a falling coconut (see here)
and not long after I saw the woman get hit on the head by one (see here)
I came across a crew doing preventive work. To get the coconuts to fall,
one groundskeeper kicked off his shoes and shinnied up the trunk.
By using his feet to keep from sliding down (frames 3 and 4), and using his arms in a bear hug
to gain altitude (frame 5), he quickly got to the top (frame 6). Total time elapsed: about 12 seconds.
He then knocked the coconuts down. In frame 7 you can just see the coconuts, which happened
to be lined up perfectly with the trunks of two other palms. Then he slid back down (frame 8).
All in a day's work.
