Step 1: Catch a starfish
Step 2: Turn it upside down on the sand and hold it there with your foot
Step 3: Insert the machete and whack it with a club while assuming your toes are invulnerable
Step 4: Repeat for all five arms
Step 5: Steep it in formaldehyde
Step 6: Dry it off and sell it to a tourist (who will, BTW, probably have it confiscated at Customs)
