3410 Bernardo de Galvez

Galveston Island, Texas

This stone marks the location of Gail Borden's home.
Gail Borden Jr. (November 9, 1801 – January 11, 1874) was a native New Yorker who settled in Texas in 1829.
Borden is famous for many things, most notably was his invention of sweetened condensed milk. But he also worked as a land surveyor and newspaper publisher and inventor.
In February 1835, Gail and his brother John Borden entered into partnership with Joseph Baker to publish the one of the first newspapers in Texas.
After the war with Mexico for Texas independence, he assisted in writing early drafts of a Republic of Texas constitution.
Borden died on January 11, 1874, in Borden in Colorado County, Texas. His body was shipped by private car to New York City to be buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Interesting information. He sounds like an important part of Texas/ American history.

I am disappointed to discover from your info that, in fact, Gail was a man!
I had high hopes this Gail would have been female especially considering the invention of condensed milk! 😋

Fine capture of this stone marker, and an interesting narrative. Also interesting that they got the dates of his birth and death wrong! V.

Nicely photographed. All I see when I look at this is how poorly the text is laid out. Why hyphenate?
Why justified type? It could have and should have been centered. He deserved better.

a remarkable person...in Toronto, during the 1950s and 60s, the Bordens brand of fresh milk was the go to choice..
