Juneteenth Mural

Galveston Island, Texas

This week, Juneteenth became a U.S. National Holiday. It has already been a state holiday in Texas for the past 40 years.
Texas House Bill 1016 stated June 19, "Emancipation Day in Texas," a legal state holiday effective starting in 1980.
Since that time, the celebration of Juneteenth continues across the state of Texas with parades, picnics, and dancing.

Houston artist Reginald C. Adams and his crew hope this mural inspires people from around the world. Entitled “Absolute Equality,” it was inspired by General Order No. 3
which federal troops read aloud at multiple locations on June 19th, 1865 informing Texas slaves of their freedom.
It was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
Adams and his team known as “The Creatives” created the mural over the course of 27 days,
1,296 labor hours, moving 312 gallons of paint, covering 5,000 square feet.

that mural seems a real draw for visitors...thank goodness people came to their senses and eventually ended the enslavement off other human beings, an event worth remembering...that head at the bottom left reminds of Olmecs more than Africans..
