Before Milk-white, now Purple with Love's wound
and Maidens call it Love-In-Idleness
Shakepeare ~ Midsummer's Night Dream
V. tricolor has known many names in the English-speaking world including heartsease, love in idleness, and flower of Jove, but the name pansy
is derived from the French, pensée (thought), and was bestowed upon the plant for its resemblance to a pensive human face.
