Day 30 ~ Pillars of Strength

Sugar Land TX

These pillars were moved from Galveston to Sugar Land in 1969. They were originally part of the Galveston County Courthouse built in 1898.
The Galveston Courthouse was one of the few structures to survive the 1900 Hurricane that killed 10,000 people in this area.
It was torn down in the mid 60s to make way for a very ugly, plain, generic building that looks more like a school than a magnificent court.
That Hurricane was the worst Natural Disaster in the history of the U.S.

Oh wow, I'm so glad they preserved them. They look great in this setting. I hate it when they tear down good old buildings to build ugly new ones. I love your composition. Thanks for sharing the info too!

They look magnificent in their present home, I must say, like a little bit of the Mediterranean. However, it is indeed a shame that such a majestic building could not have been rebuilt to the same standards. Thank you for the info and old photo of the courthouse. VV

One thing that you usually can count on in a Texas city is to see an nicely restored court house..... shame on Galveston, so glad the pillars were saved! Jv V!

What a shame! But look on the bright side - you've got what looks like a Grecian swimming pool in the middle of your town :o))

The columns are beautiful as the whole building was. Sorry it wasn't saved.
Thank you for the story and this great photo, Lynn.V.

Very elegant pillars and nice to see them incorporated in this water feature.

Sorry to learn the story of these pretty pillars. Their new setting is impressive with that reflecting pool.

They were worth saving, but so was the original building...I get so mad about that sort of thing :(

We had a cyclone ( hurricane to you ) hit the north coast early hours of this morning, but the one following it is a giant by comparison :(

A great idea to keep and relocate the pillars. Great shot. ~
So sad about the history of the building and hurricane, and the plainness of the new building.

Glad they at least kept the pillars. Looks like it was a beautiful building.

So glad these were saved. The Old Courthouse was magnificent according to your photo.
Galveston had another bad hurricane in the 1940's that was a great disaster.

Great story ... shame they had to move them from the grandeur of the court house!
