Feb. 20/04

This was an attempt at "painting with light" as observed in other PAD galleries. However, I must have something wrong because there was no way that 30 seconds would be the time I needed for the exposure on bulb setting. This exposure was at 10.4 secs at f4. It is a kind of double exposure for some reason.

I need suggestions on how to improve this one!

almost looks like the camera zoomed in or out during the exposure. From the thumb, I thought you had simply drunk too much! ;-)

Could the "double exposure" be from the shutter release button? Sometimes if the camera jiggles I get that on my coolpix.

Linda, I've never tried painting with light, at least not so far - although I'm thinking about it now. One thought I had about the flashlight is perhaps to put something over the lens - I've used a maglight (although only as an additional lightsource) in the past, but I put a sheet of kitchen paper over the head to diffuse the light. It might soften the light.

Anyway the result was a very nice shot...

Linda, I still think it's a lovely first try, and the colors are just fabulous. Keep trying, as light painting is a trial and error and most often best through mistakes! -- angela :)

Note: Somehow, this image posted itself twice! I didn't want to lose this comment so copied it from the second image and pasted it here!

I am using a Nikon 5700 camera, famous for being hard to focus in low light! I set up the shot using ISO 100 with manual focus with the lights on and then turned them out as I held the preview button pressed halfway! I then pressed the button down and "painted" with a small flashlight but it still seemed too bright, giving very hot highlights, no matter if I stopped down or ran the light from the bottom of the wine glass! For the background, I simply used our livingroom walls, thinking that the two colors would look well together. I hope to be more successful in the future!

If anyone else in the group uses a 5700 and has tried this technique, I would love to hear from you!

BTW, we had no red wine in the house so this is actually cranberry juice! Love the color, though!

Also, if you're getting too much light, you can try stopping down to f8 or smaller which will decrease the amount and intensity of the light during exposure. -- angela :)

Hmmm... can I ask for some details? Camera, ISO setting, and what kind of light you were using to paint with? It might be that your ISO was a tad too high letting too much light in, or that your light source was really strong! As for the "double exposure" I have no idea what that's from, but I LOVE it! It's a very interesting look and I think it adds to the atmosphere. As far as your colors, wow when you nail this and get the painting right, these two colors together are just going to POP and look AMAZING. Keep trying Linda! -- angela:)
