Great conundrums of our time #1
Why are so many English media commentators and football fans so concerned about which nation Scots will be supporting in the World Cup? Do they not have enough fans of their own that they need Jimmy in Jedburgh too? I will nail my colours firmly to the mast. I am Scottish - albeit one who was born in England to an English mother - and in the absence of Scotland at the World Cup finals, I will be supporting - in no particular order - Portugal, France, Spain, Brazil (who I think will win it) and whoever just happens to be playing England at the time. I will not be supporting England for the simple reason that they are Scotland's greatest rivals (they are not called the Auld Enemy for nothing, and the enemy of my enemy is my friend). Anyway, if 59% of English voters can say that no Scottish MP should ever be allowed to be Prime Minister of the United Kingdom again, despite the PM being responsible for such (obviously) unimportant national matters that affect the whole of Britain, such as: defence; foreign relations; social security; fiscal policy; and immigration, then why should any Scot feel obliged to support their World Cup squad?
