2 July 2004

73.
This has been a big week in Portugal, both on and off the football pitch. Firstly, the Prime Minister, Durão Barroso, has been nominated to be the EU's president, a post he will take up in November. Secondly, Portugal have made it to the final of Euro 2004. We all know which is most important to the majority of Portuguese (sorry dr. Barroso).

As the resident UK 'expert' on all things Portuguese, my phone has been ringing off the hook with radio, print and TV journalists all wanting me to share my wisdom with them. However, back in February, I was engaged as consultant on a BBC Radio 4 broadcast they were planning to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the April 1974 revolution (Secret Histories). As well as providing them with a detailed historical overview of events, I advised them on the approach they should adopt and the people they should interview. In all, I spent four hours on the phone answering their questions and providing guidance (for a 45 minute broadcast). While I received a small (and I mean small) payment, my contribution to the programme was not acknowledged in the broadcast. A mention was more important to me than a small honorarium. Consequently, I am now reluctant to help broadcasters.

A fantastic image and a great story to go with it. Journos never cough up!

Nuts! That is unfair. But this is a good shot of your radio..maybe you should throw it out in protest!
Best of luck to Portugal in the finals, and the new role of the President in the EU is duly noted and applauded.

Yeah, I'm one of those jerks that has to lift my feet in the movie theatres for the clean-up crew because I stay to watch the credits. I don't get all the names of course, but I do appreciate the work that goes on behind the "BANG"s and the "BOOM"s. Rather slipshod of them to shrug you off; I'd feel the same way.

Congratulations to Portugal. You should be upset ... it sounds if mention was deserved.

Very interesting caption, here. I enjoyed reading it. Great perspective on that radio.
