This has been a big week in Portugal, both on and off the football pitch. Firstly, the Prime Minister, Durão Barroso, has been nominated to be the EU's president, a post he will take up in November. Secondly, Portugal have made it to the final of Euro 2004. We all know which is most important to the majority of Portuguese (sorry dr. Barroso).
As the resident UK 'expert' on all things Portuguese, my phone has been ringing off the hook with radio, print and TV journalists all wanting me to share my wisdom with them. However, back in February, I was engaged as consultant on a BBC Radio 4 broadcast they were planning to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the April 1974 revolution (Secret Histories). As well as providing them with a detailed historical overview of events, I advised them on the approach they should adopt and the people they should interview. In all, I spent four hours on the phone answering their questions and providing guidance (for a 45 minute broadcast). While I received a small (and I mean small) payment, my contribution to the programme was not acknowledged in the broadcast. A mention was more important to me than a small honorarium. Consequently, I am now reluctant to help broadcasters.
