For about 20 years now, I have provided the annual update for the Western European Encyclopaedia's entry on Portugal.
This is my last year of doing it: I have decided to call it a day.
It has been an interesting ride documenting the trials and tribulations of Portugal since the restoration of democracy in 1974.
I have documented the rise and fall of António Guterres, former PS prime minister and currently General Secretary of the UN, the short-lived government of Santana Lopes who now looks to be heading back to the PSD, the ascension and disgrace of José Sócrates, the arrival of the Troika, Passos Coelho and austerity, the Geringonça right up to the present.
I have witnessed the gentrification (or Airbnbição) of Lisbon and then Porto and of Portugal's development from an almost third-world economy to the thriving, modern, western democracy it is today, despite its flaws.
