Wild Iris

Not sure of the actual name. Abby or Mom will correct me shortly. Found on the School House Gap Trail near Cades Cove.

Abby had a feeling we were going to see bears going down an "unofficial" trail that leads to White Oak Sinks so she got spooked and we turned around and sure enough we came face to face with a young male black bear. As I was taking this Iris picture he was coming up a very steep hill side towards us. I yelled at him strongly and since we had the advantage being on top of the hill he turned. Rather exciting.

Moments later a Park Ranger came around the trail bend with a shotgun and I stoped him to ask if he was on a bear hunt. He was actually going to where we didn't make it to, White Oak Sinks. He said there was a pack of wild pigs destroying the wildflowers at the sinks and that they had already destroyed all of the Pink Ladyslippers and he was sent to run them off.

I think this is Dwarf Crested Iris. I found two different kinds this week. The other is
Upland Dwarf Iris. Both very pretty, although I like this one best. Nice job.
