P.S. See that black gutter to the right of one of the glass lanterns? In the 1960's, I found a knuckleduster and small, sharp knife neatly hidden behind it. Probably put there by someone in the event of an emergency...

Bill's was called Stockdales (Mrs. Stockdale was Bill's mum, I believe). Then he changed the name after she passed away. I remember her and him well. To the right of Stockdale's was the post office. I also remember the Jug and Bottle and also leaned over to see inside the pub! There was a phone box to the left of the Castle, just outside the picture, and I believe someone was stabbed to death in there. I remember his name but don't want to mention it out of respect to the family.

when i was a kid in th e70's i used to go to the jug and bottle at the side of the pub, in Dutnels opening, and buy sweets and fizzy drinks. i remember leaning over over the counter to try and see into the pub. you can just see the side door in this picture. Next to the bike shop that you can just see was a shop called Bills who sold cakes and sweets. I used to have a gypsey tart as a treat if mum was flush that week.

Used to go to this pub during the 1950's with my Mum,Dad,Uncle Stan & Aunt Betty & their daughter Maureen. Little garden out the back - Smiths Crisps with the little blue salt bag, loved it.
