When Edward Banks designed and built the area, smart and spacious was what he intended. It was built purely as a residential road and Sir Edward even built his own home to the rear of where the Royal Hotel now stands. His dream town was engulfed by the need for cheap housing for dock workers and he retreated to his home behind the wall at Sheerness East, Sheppey Court. Which as we speak is now in turn about to be swallowed by housing.

It looked very smart and spacious in those days. What went wrong!
