Last week I was driving on the I-680 going from San Jose to Sacramento. There is a new bridge across SF Bay, and right alongside it, was a monstrosity from a previous era that looked remarkably similar to this!

I remember crossing this bridge in the early 1950's, a one way system was operated with traffic lights. I remember at least part of the road being made of railway sleepers. You can still see the remains of this bridge on each side of the Swale.

I vaguely remember this monstrosity from my boyhood. A ship hit it one Christmas, and we all had to go on a shuttle service from the Dockyard on tugs up to Chatham to catch the train to London.

When I was a kid I was told the lifting section was made out of old railway sleepers and that was why it made such a bumpety bumpety bumpety sound when a bus or car went over it. Was this true?
