Ightham Moat


Ightham mote is a lovely 14th century medieval moated manor house located 6 miles east of Sevenoaks in Kent. It is not grand but standing in a sheltered wooded cleft of the Kentish Weald it conjures up the history and atmosphere of 650 years ago, better than any other of its type.

Ighthams survival owes much to its seclusion and the modest pretensions of its successive owners, who were squires, sheriffs, Members of Parliament and even courtiers. The last owner was Charles Henry Robinson of Portland Maine USA, who bought it from a consortium of Kentish businessmen in 1953. A bachelor, he bequeathed the house to the National trust on his death in 1985

I recognize this house as having been used in a Granada TV presentation of a Sherlock Holmes story titled "The Musgrave Ritual". I always assumed the exterior shots were a compilation of scenes from various buildings. How nice to find the structure is real. Thanks for posting them. :-)
