The valley, situated in Fayoum, Egypt - around 200 Km from Cairo - is located in an area that, 40 millions years ago, was covered by the "Tethys sea". The discovery of fossil remains of a now extinct suborder of whales, the Archaeoceti, opened the doors to more details in the study of the evolution of whales.
This site has been added to UNESCO’s “World Heritage List”.
