The building of this castle is an example the extravagance of King Ludwig II of Barvaria. He had this castle constructed between 1869 and 1886 but it never served as his residence. He was so far in debt that in 1886 his cabinet ministers had him declared insane and deposed him. He died mysteriously a day later.
