Great Lakes National Cemetery

Great Lakes National Cemetery was opened in 2005 in Holly, Michigan. As of February, 2018, they have around 35,000 interments.
The site covers 544 acres. It is a truly beautiful place and I feel blessed to have it so close to my home. If anyone has a friend
or family member buried there and would like a photo of the grave site, just send me an email (dick.lowthian@gmail.com) and I'll take one and email it to you.

This cemetery is so beautiful.My husband (Butch) is buried here since 2010.I.like to browse through the pictures,while I think of him. I think of everyone. My husband served from 1960-1980,had two Vietnam tours. Sonn I'll be with him.

My friend Dale Schwarz went to Vietnam, we were engaged, I joined the peace Corp and lost track, I now recently found him here, I am so sorry, . We were engaged and I never had a chance to say goodbye.

I am trying to finish the photos on the Find A Grave site and this cemetery is only 24% done , I wonder if you could photograph the graves and send me the photos because someone may want to know where their loved ones are. I am trying to finish some of the National Cemeteries and I don't get out much at all. I live in New Mexico and my own National Cemetery in Santa Fe is not complete either. Do you know of any other websites that have pictures of our National Cemeteries? I don't even have a list to go by on this one could you help?

My younger brother, John M. Zaborski, died unexpectedly on 4/30/14. As he was a Marine, I chose to have his ashes, and those of his wife, interned at Great Lakes. The ceremony, courtesy of Great Lakes, was beautiful with 2 Marines in attendance. They presented the flag to me and everyone had tears flowing. Even though John did not want anything special, Great Lakes made his final resting place very special. Thank you to all the volunteers who give their time & knowledge assisting the families of the deceased. Great Lakes is a beautiful place & should be visited by school children as part of their history class. It is awe inspiring.

When my dad passed, I was unsure what to do. My older sister , being military, told me there can be no place other then Great Lakes National. Dad may not have made it to Arington, but he deserved to be honored for his service to this country. Thanks to those who made this place possible for our service men and women, for our moms and dads. May God grant those who visit, pease .

My mother passed away suddenly on September 23, 2013. We brought her to Great Lakes on Oct. 3. My father will join her there some day, as he was a veteran of the Korean War. This is a beautiful place, but I sure do miss you mom.

My father was a WWII vet and he passed away May 1, 2013. His wife of 67 years, my mother passed away in 2009. We have kept her ashes so when dad went they could be together forever more in one place again, at this beautiful place in Holly, Michigan. The service is this Friday. I miss my father terribly, I love you daddy, from your little girl. Diane Waddington

My mother and father are both buried here. My father was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He and mom decided on this beautiful spot for their resting place. Through the funerals and the grieving, the Cemetery personnel were outstanding!

Just a comment on the war dog, there is a war dog cemetery located in South Lyon, Michigan which has a lot of famous dogs located in it. This would be a most fitting place to place him, along with hundreds of others from WWII until present.

My beloved husband of 12 years was put to rest in a columbarium on April 12, 2011. He is in such a beautiful place that overlooks the water, which couldn't be more appropriate, as he sailed for over 30 years and passed that love of the water to his children. He is in section CC20--Grave59 and passed away on November 21, 2010. I would love a picture as I live in northern Michigan and it is not easy for me to get there, but I will join him one day.

My husband Dick was buried in this beautiful cemetery Nov. 9 2010. A Michigan Veterans Group came on their motorcycles to guard our prayers. A gaggle of geese flew over in the "lost man formation"as we were watching the coffin being let down into the grave. This is a Healing Prayer of Baha'u'llah, Founder of the Baha'i Faith:: "Thy Name is my healing, o my God! And remembrance of Thee is my remedy. Nearness to Thee is my hope, and love for Thee is my companion. Thy mercy to me is my healing and my succor in both this world and the world to come. Thou art, verily, the All-Knowing, the All-Bountiful, the All-Wise."

My beloved husband Howard J. Schulert untimely death took him from us on June 8th, 2011. This was the very first time i had the pleasure of visiting the National Cemetery. There are no words that can describe this cemetery or the PRIDE you feel when you enter the gates. I want to Thank Uncle Orin and the United States Military for the pride and thanks they give each soldier that has the privilege to rest there until God comes to take them home. Thank you!!!!

I was here in July, regretfully to witness the departure of a special friend. I think, other than burying Michael at sea (a place he loved) this location was just as suitable, such beauty & peace. Sunny with a light breeze that day; a fine place to rest one's spirit!

My father's unexpected death took the entire family by surprise in December, 2011. Initial plans were to take him back to Southeast Missouri, but by his having lived in the Flint area for the past 45+ years, the decision to bury him here made more sense. All of the staff are to be commended for one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever seen. Your commitment makes me proud of my dad and his service to this country, and I know we could not have chosen a more appropriate spot to honor his life. Thank you.

My brother 1st. Sgt. Richard Noell was laid to rest there. He served 23 years for our country. This is where he deserves to be laid to rest. Thankyou for the care you give this beautiful place. Our vets deserve this. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart, from Richards sister Kim

Guest, thank you for your work on behalf of my father who was laid to rest there. He died over Memorial Day and was buried on D-Day, seemed appropriate for this WWII vet. As far as your service to the "powers that be go" know the real "Power that Is" loves you and those looking down on you from above who are buried in the cemetery are grateful for your hard work.

Having run afoul of the Powers That Be, I was required to serve a stint of community service. This is the place I chose. 80 hours over 8 days. And I could not have made a better choice, nor felt better about the time I put in. Thank you Vets...from the bottom of my heart.

My brother in law wanted to be buried at Great Lakes but when he passed in 2004, it was not completed. My sister-in-law had never seen the place so in 2007 my husband and I took her there for a view. We drove through the grounds and were so impressed. She just passed recently and they will both be buried there. One thing I notice missing in your photos is the beautiful wall section for cremation interments and the beautiful view of the pond and benches where you can sit.

My brother's cremains were interred at Great Lakes Cemetery today. The staff were extremely helpful. The whole place is lovely to visit. He died in March, but the family was not so sure about where to place his ashes. He was an honorably discharged Marine, so Great Lakes was the right place.

We haven't been to this cemetery yet, but we are very much looking forward to it. We have heard a lot of great things about it. I think my Father-in law is going to be very happy there with all his comrades.

Our family is very proud to take our father to this cemetery. Noone has seen it yet but from the comments above I am sure it is beautiful. We are very proud that he served our country in WWII, he was wounded in action and had many stories to tell us all.

When we pull up to the gates and all the flags are flying my heart soars !!! What a beautiful sight. I know that my son is well taken care of here. I visit often and feel the peace all around me and say Thank You to all that had served before him, with him and after him....

We just had my father disinterred from up north, where we were never able to visit him during the thirty years he was buried there, and interred at Great Lakes. It made my 92-year old mother cry to once again have her beloved husband close by. She will have her place beside him when the time comes. My husband served as well, and we will join them at this beautiful cemetery. God bless all the soldiers, past, present & future!

Just found your site while looking for some photos of this cemetery. Thank you for having it. We are burying my dad's ashes here tomorrow. He died in Feb. but my mom, his wife of 62 1/2 years, wanted him buried on Memorial Day week-end. He served in the South Pacific theatre in WWII.

My father-in-law is there and it was exactly what he wanted for a final resting place. The staff is excellant and very helpful and understanding. The veterns who serve on the landscape team keep it beautiful year round. The Young Marines and other volunteers do a great job placinng the flags for Memorial Day. The local VFW and American Legion posts do a great job honoring their fallen comrades at the funeral services. As a Marine Reservist (Sgt. 1977-1983) I don't have enough active duty time to be buried here but maybe they will change the rules by then.

I was so pleased when we first arrived at Great Lakes National Cemetery, I was afraid we would be leaving him (my husband) in a dark and haunted place. My sons and I all felt such peace and knew that we were leavin him where he would want to be. The service was beautiful, the grounds are well kept and the whole place has a calming effect on you. It truly leaves me with a feeling of peace to know he is in his final resting place here in this beautiful place.

This is a beautiful place I didn't know a place like this, my brother James A Goolsby he served in vitanam he had a heart attack on the job and pass awa;y the funeral home suggest there the service there was so nice and the pond its a place I will never forget I would like for my father to be there but I have a brother next to him in Detroit michigan I just wish my brother could have seen it I thank you for everthing

This is the most beautiful cemetery I have ever been in. Sight unseen before my father passed away December 28th, 2010. I found this cemetery in the google search and chose this for my father. We saw the cemetery for the first time at his burial. WOW! It is breath taking and I have already asked my husband if we could be buried here. We are retired and were looking into different places to be buried but after seeing this, there is not another I want to look at. It is truely the most peaceful, well kept, and most beautiful place. I will be very honored to be buried here with my husband who has given 22 1/2 years to the USARMY! Thank you for such a beautiful place to call our "last home". My father is in section 3, plot 321. I wanted plot 322 but his neighbor came in right behind him. Knowing that I will be here with my husband sets both our minds at peace.

I just got home from a funeral at Great lakes National Cemetery... for a very dear friend who passed away... my ex husband was also buried there August of 2007... i wish the cemetery would have been available when my dad passed away in 1981.... he was a 26 year veteran of the Army...it's a beautiful peaceful place....

This is one of the best cemeterys in the world its only for people that was in the force beacuse im only 13 years old and lost my dad and it was hard 4 my family but the bearrial sites is nice and the mate gets berride on top of toe other spouce when thay die but i love this cemetery. (sec.2 Glen J Simmons)
