Australian White Ibis

Threskiornis molucca

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Another very common bird in our city. It's scavenging habits have made it a nuisance. It is very good at overturning rubbish bins, and stealing food from picnickers, and generally making a nuisance of itself. It also breeds in large numbers, and takes over the habitat and breeding sites of many other rarer birds.

A fine portrait, Lou. We also have them in numbers in some parks and rural areas but so far not so many in the city. I have seen them being a nuisance as you describe around the Gold Coast.

In spite of it's troublesome nature, I love seeing the Ibis and having also seen it on the walls of Egyptian tombs. I guess it's persistant and sometimes irritating ways are part of how it's managed to survive since ancient times, while others species are now extinct. This is a beautiful close look at this ancient Egyptian God.
