Inside - Sept. 06-04

Some of you might be asking the question ; Inside of what ?
This was shot for the purpose of this gallery : http://www.pbase.com/lou_giroud/clabecq

The "Forges de Clabeq", a very old steel factory was left alone by the family who owed it and the belgian governement had to support it for years until the bankrupcy was finaly applied and the factory shut down in 1997 leaving some 2500 people without a job from one day to another.

This is a view inside the blast furnace tower, a space between the furnace stall and the cuipers.
The ring tube one can see in the center of the photo is the converter ring injector where 1200 degrees hot air is injected in the lower part of the furnace to power up the fusion of iron and slag.

I will post some more pictures once a week during this next comming weeks as a reminder and redirector to this amazing gallery to see for those who like old factory ruins, technology pictures and metal structures.

There are so many steel works closed in the US now. I like the coldness of the lights and harsh lines here to tell that story by the photo.

Having worked in my young days in the engine and boiler rooms of ships I find this sort of subject very interesting.
Thank you.

What a gigantic effort you have taken upon you here, Lou! It's a sad story of material and terrible people waste - and difficult to watch at times. But I understand your attraction to the place and it's melancholy beauty. Like this picture where the light let's you forget the decay and sense some of the former power of this place! I saw some of the pictures in the gallery too - that's going to take time to go through! - and oddly enough the photos of the empty offices touched me the most, even if that's a minor waste...
