Chapel of the Pieta by Michelangelo Buonarroti 1499

view map

This is probably the world's most famous sculpture of a religious subject. Michelangelo carved it when he was 24 years old, and it is the only one he ever signed. The beauty of its lines and expression leaves a lasting impression on everyone.

With this magnificent statue Michelangelo has given us a highly spiritual and Christian view of human suffering. Artists before and after Michelangelo always depicted the Virgin with the dead Christ in her arms as grief stricken, almost on the verge of desperation. Michelangelo, on the other hand, created a highly supernatural feeling. http://saintpetersbasilica.org/Altars/Pieta/Pieta.htm

Nice Shot! it is very difficult to get a good shot of the Pieta - the crowds are engulfing, and the wall of glass in front of the work is loaded with reflections

Nicely captured. Brings back memories of our visit last year.

I believe I read that Michelangelo got out his chisel and "signed" it across the girdle over the Virgin's robe, angry that people were attributing the work to the new-kid-on-the-block, Leonardo !
If this is not true, then it should be.
