Mount Nebo is believed to be the location where Moses was permitted to see the promised land. A monastery was built on the site during the late Roman, early Byzantine period, which was occupied until approximately the 10th century. The ruins of the Byzantine church have been partially restored and are now protected by a modern structure. It is currently in use as an Greek Orthodox church.
