Lake Havasu City was established in 1964 by Robert P. McCulloch of McCulloch Chainsaws. McCulloch purchased 3,500 acres (14 kmē) of property on the east side of Lake Havasu along Pittsburgh Point, the peninsula that was transformed into "the island" when McCulloch dug a 8ft (2.4m) deep canal across the pennisula for a place to site the London Bridge. McCulloch bought the bridge for US$2.5 million from the City of London when the bridge was replaced in 1968. The bridge was disassembled, and the marked stones were shipped to Lake Havasu City and reassembled for another US $7 million.

Lake Havasu is a very popular tourist spot. The lake, the Colorado river and the surrounding desert and mountains make for a very beautiful location. But, I must warn anyone planning to visit during the summer, it is incredibly hot here. The fact that the lake is located in the Mojave Desert, and is not very far from Death Valley, pretty much says everything you need to know. The weekend we visited the temperature hit 120F (49C), and while it is a dry heat, 120 is hot regardless of the humidity. And it only cooled down to about 91F (33C) by sunrise. The only saving grace is the water in the Colorado River at the upper end of the lake was a cool 69F (20C) and a comfortable 82F (28C) further down in the main body of water.
