Situated in the northeast of Lake Onega, this island is home to an outdoor museum-preserve featuring edifices and structures of wooden architecture...it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with focal point - the Kizhi Ensemble - comprising the Transfiguration Cathedral, the Intercession Church next door, and the Bell Tower in between! The Transfiguration Cathedral, built in 1714, has thirty thousand shingles on 22 separate cupolas structured in five tiers...and reportedly built without nails!! The Intercession Church has a flat roof, which too, is reportedly constructed without nails and nine shingled cupolas. The bell tower was completed in 1874. These structures are awe-inspiring indeed...
On the island too are "living" exhibits...artisans working crafts in wood, embroidery, etc....using traditional methods...
