Birchbark Biting is an indigenous art form, perfected centuries ago by the Algonquian language speaking peoples of the Americas.
This art form consists of biting several times into a carefully folded sheet of birch bark. These bite marks produce perfectly symmetrical and unique patterns often used to guide beadwork sewn onto clothing or quill work. One bite mark for each bead would ensure the symmetrical placement of the pattern. When the beadwork was completed and sewn onto the article, the birch paper could easily be torn away from the beads sewn over it.
LizBeth combines her love for both Native Indian and Celtic Arts to produce these unique and beautiful Birchbark Transparencies. Located just East of the Artistic Village of Merrickville, LizBeth is one of just a dozen Birchbark biters known in the world today.
