Thanks to Vern's, note I hit the books and agree with him that it is a Merganser, a diver. However it is probably one of this years babies since we have seen it in a group of 5 all the same coloring. I couldn't get a good shot of it as the light was poor and from the wrong direction. It was a treat to see them swimming along dipping their heads under water till all of a sudden they all dove in unison. Waiting to see just where they would pop up again, usually 15 to 20 feet further along.

We all grew up wrongly calling them Loons.
