The Frederick Arts Council launched the Keys to Frederick project while 30 keys were displayed in downtown Frederick. Keys were selected as the sculpture in recognition of the city's ties to Francis Scott Key, the author of the Star Spangled Banner. Several Keys were vandalized but quickly recovered. Key No. 1 was broken into pieces in front of the Frederick Art Council. Key No. 20 was not accountable, could be an early victim of vandalism. Key No. 23 was knocked down (fortunately in one piece) and subsequently removed. Key No. 29 was stolen. Though having been recovered later, it was not re-installed. All together, four keys were missing from this gallery.
