Irrigation Water Cleaner

While driving east on Interstate 90 southeast of Ellensburg, Washington, I saw a strange paddle wheel device next to a field. A close inspection revealed it to be part of an irrigation system, but that's all I knew.

After returning home I got in touch with the local irrigation district. Ken Hasbrouck told me that the device is a water-powered cleaner that removes debris and weed seed from the water before it sent to the fields for irrigation. The paddles do double duty: power the device and screen the debris. (Thanks, Ken!)

Photos were taken in June 2005.
