Delicate Arch: Moonlight



Two days before a full moon I hiked to Delicate Arch for some evening photography. Hiking up the trail just before sunset provided some interesting views. At the arch there was the typical crowd of arch-at-sunset worshippers, many with cameras.

I photographed the people, staying until after the sun went down. Then I hiked back down the trail a bit and made a diversion to the basin below the arch. Everyone else returned to the parking lot.

Sunlight faded from the sky, replaced by moonlight. After shooting for about two hours I walked back to the parking lot almost entirely by moonlight, turning on my headlamp only in a few places, and then only briefly. Unforgettable!

My assistant in the field (Joe Tripod) did not complain one bit about this night duty, even though it was past his bed time.
