Arch Circumnavigation, Part 1: Winter Camp Wash

Winter Camp Wash is a stream that runs near Delicate Arch, roughly following a path from northeast to southwest. Where it comes closest to the arch, it has created a huge amphitheater in the sandstone. From the amphitheater it runs through a canyon, passes over the the park road that leads to Delicate Arch Viewpoint, and flows into Salt Wash. This gallery shows a hike upstream from the park road to the amphitheater. Photos were taken in April 2006.

Lee, the official brochure for Arches National Park says that backcountry permits are required only for overnight hiking. No permit was required for the Gooseneck trip (BLM land I presume).
