The New New Physics, whose bright center is the Cheney-Rove Institute of Armchair Science, has proven that if you are indeed stationary relative to the grapes it is purely coincidence, and you are double-dog dared to prove otherwise beyond a slim shadow of a doubt, nanny nanny boo-boo. What is likely happening here is the mountains are moving south, the train isn't moving at all, and neither you nor the grapes actually exist. The Institute considers this a fortunate outcome because the train's cargo will be delivered to fuel the economy, the vintner will have a massive tax writeoff, and you won't vote in November. Relatively speaking.

Dave, you've brilliantly touched on the Law of Circularity (e.g., the modern formulation of the ancient view that everything moves in cycles). First, you are immobile due to inertia induced by endless hours of watching B-grade movies. Then you are rendered mobile by desire for fermented grapes. Finally, you are again returned to immobility by excessive consumption of said grapes. Good job!

A very well done photo. V.

Gin, Drambouie, Irish cream---it's all relative. The best theories are born of intoxication.

I asked my friend Albert to confirm to me his theory of relativity.
He said "What".
So we opened another bottle of gin.

The Third Side's comment prompted me to ponder the unponderable. Einstein's Seventh Corollary of Relativity suggests that aunts and uncles---who are also relative---generally don't move unless their inertia is overcome by economic or social forces. Listorama's Theory of Grape Relativity states that the product of vineyards do not move me until they have fermented appropriately, confirming that these grapes had only potential motion (it was, by the way, directed northward to the fermenting vats). Checking with BNSF revealed that the train was not transporting writing paper and envelopes, so it wasn't stationery.

Nice! If Joe Tripod gets on that train he might just take to the Hobo lifestyle and ride the rails away from Renton.

According to Einstein, all movement is relative. Perhaps the grapes are moving eastbound and the train is stationary? Put Joe Tripod on that train with a slow shutter speed and he'll confirm it.
Ahh, . . . . science.
