Hiking off-trail increases the chance that you will encounter weirdos

Arches National Park (Moab, Utah)

Leaving the safety of a trail can lead to gruesome encounters, as shown here. During a lunch break
above the canyon of Salt Wash, about a mile from the only trail in the area (the Delicate Arch
Trail), I was relaxing and minding my own business. Suddenly this apparition presented itself;
the shock of seeing it made me choke on my sandwich. I should have heeded the advice of Professor
Listorama, noted expert in hiking psychology, who has stated "Leaving established trails exposes the
hiker to unimaginable horrors." I hope that my painful experience somehow benefits other explorers.

Joe Tripod, my photographic assistant, scared the weirdo away (thanks, Joe!).
Then we soldiered on, having no more experiences of this type.

Jason, there was nothing funny about this experience. I still have nightmares.

Looks like you walked right into a Monty Python skit. Happens more often than people think.

Maybe Don Juan was sending you a message, probably reminding you to floss after eating your sandwich.

You're lucky to be alive after such a hideous encounter. They ought to have warning signs!

The professor is indeed on top of his game. This is scary. However, having said that I vote for it.

The eyes are windows to the soul. Never trust a man who hides his eyes.
Trust me.

Relaxing and minding your own business can lead to traumatic events. Especially when sandstone is involved. Be careful out there.
