Freight train about 8 miles (12km) away [28mm lens]

Taken from I-80 in Nevada, southeast of Oasis (Exit 378) view map

The train is only visible in the Original size version of the photo.

While driving eastward toward Wendover on I-80, I happened to see this freight train way off in the distance in Goshute Valley. Because "I brake for trains," I pulled onto the shoulder to get a better view.

The train is about eight miles away, near Shafter Siding on the former Western Pacific (now Union Pacific) line that runs from Salt Lake City to California. The very low, smooth profile of its left end told me that the locomotives were on the right end, thus it was going westward.

The next photo is a telephoto view of the same scene.

I can barely make out the engineers name tag from this vantage point!

This is a sort of parallel universe. I doubt you even noticed but I did. I80 taken with a D80. No wonder this photo is so crystal clear.

This is where your 1200mm f2.8 would have come in handy!
