The breach: a scramble

Castle Rock climbers' trail

Imagine a vertical line running down from the right edge of the "white boulder." That line is
where the route goes up through the wall in a series of "steps." At the top of the steps the
route turns left and traverses in front of the white boulder, then continues up the slope. The
white boulder is actually a sandstone boulder that is coated with a thin white layer on one side.
It is visible from far below on the trail: http://www.pbase.com/listorama/image/67124434 .

Now I realize my problem on my last visit! Cause I took only foot prints and left only pictures....

A snow drift?

have you been adrift for a long time?

Apology accepted---this time. Now that the cat is out of the bag I can respond to your theory without incurring the wrath of my superiors. That coating made me wonder too, and I could not resist touching it, even though doing so violated every rule in the book ("Scully's Field Guide to Paranormal, Unmentionable, and Decadent Events, Seventh Edition"). My fingers still tingle unpleasantly from the brief encounter. Ignoring the philosophy of "take only pictures, leave only footprints," I absconded with a sample of the rock---in a secure bio-box, of course---and arranged for some tests: carbon dating, infrared fratostatic inversion, bombardment with electrophoresis, etc. The tests revealed nothing odd about the coating or its supporting medium. Your excellent input makes additional analyses imperative. "I want to believe," if you get my drift.

John, your perceptive comments are most appreciated, but again I must ask you to use some discretion in this public forum. I fear that your blatant implied reference to extra-terrestrials could cause a panic in southeastern Utah. The result could be a sudden and irreversible decline in the tourist activity there. I would not want to be a party to such a development even though it would make it easier for me to get a modest motel room in Moab with minimal lead time.

Perhaps it was actually glazed by the hyper-ion dilithium drive of a departing trans galactic cruiser. Or maybe not. Hard to tell from this angle.
